Vlak

Vlak is a great clone of the classic game Worm that you can see on almost every cell phone under games. The original worms was one of the most simple games ever made but still managed to pull a crowd and was very addictive. Vlak offers the same and while testing the game I noticed that I was at level 13 all of a sudden so Vlak was as addictive as Worm after all at least for me.

The Great Escape

If you’ve seen the movie, and liked it, than you will probably have a nice thrill with “The Great Escape”

I saw and liked it a lot, and found the game strangely addictive. Like most old-timer DOS games, “Great Escape” has a simple storyline which keeps you, the player, focused at all times. You are a British RAF pilot in the WWII time period, who was captured by the Germans after his plane crashed. Imprisoned in a Stalag Luft prison camp, your goal is to escape the camp along with your fellow POW’s and make it back to England unharmed (although this second part of the story is not included).

Arcade Volleyball

Arcade Volleyball is a 1988 volleyball game for computers running MS-DOS. With a total file size of only around 40K and CGA graphics, this volleyball simulator was primitive even for its time. Players can play head-to-head or one player can play against the computer. The volleyball “teams” consist of only one player each: creatures composed of large round heads with feet and exaggerated facial features. This simple game has become somewhat of a cult classic. Several remakes have been made or are in development, and the game itself is posted for download on many web sites dedicated to older games.

Arcade Volleyball originally appeared as a type-in program for the Commodore 64 computer in the June 1988 edition of the magazine COMPUTE!’s Gazette. The designers were Rhett Anderson and David Hensley, Jr. , who had also made a similar game called Basketball Sam & Ed the year before. “Arcade Volleyball” was a deliberate effort to capitalize on the success of that game.

The original game for the Commodore 64 was inspired by Pong (actually, the two-paddle “Hockey” variant of Pong, note the two heads on each side of the court in the Commodore 64 version) and programmed by Rhett Anderson. He and Randy Thompson then wrote an Amiga version from scratch for an early issue of Amiga Resource magazine. It was this version that was ported to the PC by a COMPUTE! Publications programmer (this would be Kevin Mykytyn, Tim Midkiff, or Tim Victor–to be researched).

“Basketball Sam & Ed” was adapted into the Sega CD game “Bouncers” by former COMPUTE! staffers Rhett Anderson, Tim Midkiff, and Randy Thompson while they were at the Sierra company Dynamix. The art director for Bouncers was John Garvin. Garvin and Midkiff are now at Sony Bend working on the Syphon Filter series for PS2 and PSP. Thompson runs Buzz Monkey software.

Arcade Volleyball was not seen as strong enough to make into a console game by the group.

Zaxxon

Zaxxon is a 1982 arcade game developed and released by Sega. Some sources claim that Japanese electronics company Ikegami Tsushinki also worked on the development of Zaxxon. The game gives the player the experience of flying a fighter craft through a fortress while shooting at enemy entities (missiles, enemy gunfire, etc.) The object of the game is to hit as many targets as possible without being shot down or running out of fuel—which can be replenished, paradoxically, by blowing up fuel drums.

Centipede

Deep in the Enchanted Forest lives the Centipede and its evil comrades Flea, Spider and Scorpion. Now you’re trapped with them, stuck in a mushroom patch and armed with three magic wands which can dispel the creatures. The only problem is that Centipede becomes segmented every time you hit it, Flea drops more mushrooms into the playing field and requires two hits to destroy, Scorpion turns every mushroom it touches poisonous, and Spider dances around you, making it harder to kill.

Paratrooper

Paratroopers are used for tactical advantage as they can be inserted into the battlefield from the air, thereby allowing them to be positioned in areas not accessible by land. It is one of the three types of “forced entry” strategic techniques for entering a theater of war; the other two are by land and sea. This ability to enter the battle from different locations allows paratroopers to evade fortifications that are in place to prevent attack from a specific direction, and the possible use of paratroopers forces an army to spread their defenses to protect other areas which would normally be safe by virtue of the geography. Another common use for paratroopers is to establish an airhead for landing other units.
